AnimalZone - Designed With Love: Healing Hearts at Big Dog Ranch Rescue - Season 15, Episode 3 (Part 2)

In Part 2 of AnimalZone’s remarkable visit to Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Palm Beach County, we explore how thoughtful design, compassion, and purpose come together to create a place where both dogs and people begin again.

Founder Lauree Simmons, a former builder and interior designer, brought her professional vision to her life’s calling—creating a rescue campus that feels less like a shelter and more like a beautifully crafted resort for dogs. Every detail is intentional, welcoming, and uplifting.

Nowhere is that more evident than in the Meet & Greet Center, where potential adopters spend meaningful time with dogs they’re considering. With soaring ceilings, warm spaces, and room for families to connect, the experience replaces the sadness often associated with shelters with joy, hope, and confidence. At Big Dog Ranch Rescue, there are no tears of sorrow—only the occasional tear of happiness and plenty of smiles.

We also visit Puppy Town, where 20 private puppy cabins allow mother dogs to raise their litters in peace. Each family has its own room and generous outdoor yard, giving puppies the healthiest possible start in life.

One of the most powerful programs we witness is the Veteran Service Dog Training Program at the Hoffman Family Veteran Dog Training Lodge. Here, dogs of various breeds—chosen for their temperament and ability—undergo an extraordinary training regimen: six sessions a day with eight trainers over six months, followed by another six months of specialized training tailored to the specific needs of veterans suffering from PTSD and other challenges. To date, 220 trained dogs are now providing life-changing support to veterans across the country.

We also go behind the scenes at the extensive Veterinary Clinic, where medical care meets compassion, and preview the future Patriot Pet Lodge, a planned expansion that will triple the size of the veteran program. This unique facility will also allow deployed service members to safely board their beloved dogs while serving overseas—ensuring no one has to choose between duty and devotion.

At Big Dog Ranch Rescue, lives are not just saved—they are rebuilt with intention, dignity, and love.
