Animal Zone: A Safe Haven in the Florida Keys - Season 16, Episode 02

AnimalZone travels to the beautiful Florida Keys to visit the Florida Keys SPCA, where compassion comes in all shapes and sizes — from dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets to a pair of very young tortoises who may still be around a century from now.

Founded in 1999 by a group of dedicated volunteers, the Florida Keys SPCA has grown into an important lifeline for animals throughout the Keys, rescuing, caring for and rehabilitating approximately 2,000 animals each year while helping them find loving homes.


Executive Director Tammy Fox introduces us to some of the shelter’s newest residents, including Donatello and Michelangelo, two adorable two-month-old tortoises. With lifespans that can exceed 100 years, adopting one of these youngsters could mean welcoming a companion not only for yourself, but potentially for your children and even your grandchildren.


We also meet Miracle, a dog being cared for through the SPCA’s remarkable Safe Haven Program, which provides temporary shelter for the beloved pets of people escaping domestic abuse. By making sure their animals are safe and cared for, the program removes one of the heartbreaking obstacles that can prevent victims from leaving dangerous situations. And proving that even the smallest residents can steal the show, we meet an irresistible kitten named Sloan.


AnimalZone also sits down with Cathy, the Florida Keys SPCA’s behaviorist, who shares practical insights into understanding and living happily with our animal companions. Through the organization’s community helpline, people struggling with behavioral issues involving dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals can receive advice and guidance — even if they live far beyond the Florida Keys.


Finally, Tammy introduces us to two energetic 10-week-old Belgian Malinois–German Shepherd mix puppies, already displaying plenty of personality as they await the next chapter of their young lives.


It’s an uplifting visit to an organization that demonstrates that animal welfare is about much more than finding homes. It’s about strengthening the bond between people and animals, helping families through difficult times, and making sure that every creature — whether covered in fur or carrying its home on its back — has the opportunity for a safe and happy life.
